The grass is greener . . .

At one time in my chequered past, besides selling timeshare and working on a kibbutz, I farmed a variety of species of animals, and I found that no matter where they were, they wanted to be somewhere else. A lush paddock with fresh new kikuyu grass wasn't good enough. They wanted the sourveld grass, filled with their own droppings and totally meaningless in terms of nutritional value.

And so it is with us mortals.

The chicken-run or in the 80s they called it the PFP - Packing For Perth - where people fear the future and head for greener pastures. Having returned from a three week trip to Australia and New Zealand as Media Manager with the Sharks in the Super 14, I have to say that South Africa is the best.

Great weather, smarter people, and technologically up to date.

Yes, we have our problems, but everyone does. In New Zealand a girl was raped and murdered while we were there - this in a so-called civilised country. And not to appear condescending or putting the country down, but being a passionate and patriotic South African, I have to say, New Zealand looks pretty much stuck in the 80s.

We simply have to be more positive and accept certain challenges, and then try to be proactive about somehow changing our world.

Electricity problems? New Zealand has them as well. In wintertime they face the stark prospect of black-outs.

And if we are concerned, they will be with their freezing cold temperatures. Returning to 25C temperatures in Durban compared to close on a sub-zero climate - both are in autumn / winter was like stepping into the Caribbean from Iceland!

Let's be proactive and do something.

Until next time... Cheers!
